Workshops: What classes would you like to see?

Workshops at Spare Room have been terrific so far, and I’m excited about doing more this summer. Before I start scheduling them, I would love to hear from you what classes you’d be most excited about.

Here are a few ideas I’ve been thinking about:

Cocktails
Tips for capturing tempting looking cocktails, from garnishes and props to just the right lighting for glassware.

Outdoor Food Photography
Trying to get great food shots at your picnic? This class will help you learn to work with those harsh lighting conditions.

Photographing Meat
Many people find meat a difficult thing to shoot, but I think it is beautiful. We’ll work with styling both raw and cooked meat in natural and artificial light.

Food in Action
This class will focus on special techniques for bringing more life to your food shots including pour shots, people cooking and eating, and tips for being your own model.

Just Desserts
In this dessert food styling & photography class, we’ll cover the basics of styling and shooting beautiful desserts as well as some of the challenges (ice cream, pie slices). Plus, we’ll eat the leftovers.

Product Photography
No food in this class, just working with props and light to take photos of crafts/products (soaps, salts, cards, clothing, jewelry, etc.) and some Photoshop techniques for prepping those images for the web.

Doughnuts
We do more than photography at Spare Room! In this cooking class, you’ll learn to make 3 different types of doughnuts plus glazes, and go home with a boxful! (Can be made a Gluten Free or a Vegan class on request!)

Natural Food Styling & Photography 101
This is the class I’ve been teaching for the past few months… are their more of you out there that would like to take it?

Do these sound interesting to you? Do you have other ideas that you’d like to see? Leave me a comment to let me know!

If my schedule allows, I’d be very interested in taking a MEAT photography class (it’s tricky!) and a PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY class. You’re a wonderful instructor and I got a lot out of the other two classes. Whatever you teach, I’m sure it’ll be good!

They all sound incredibly informative. My wish list includes Cocktails and Natural food styling, Product and Photographing Meat would be invaluable as well!
Biggest wish is for classes to be offered 2 in a day, considering I am an out of towner looking to attend.

Keep up the wonderful work and all that you do to help educate the rest of us!!

I’d love to take the Food Styling & Photography 101 class. Any chance you could offer a weekend session? Otherwise, I’ll take a day off from work soon. :)

Still very interested in being able to take your Natural Food Styling & Photography 101 as well as the Outdoor Food Photography! These all sound pretty spectacular! Looking forward to seeing what you end up setting up.

I am most interested in the natural styling and photography workshop. But i would also be interested in food in action, outdoor photography and dessert.

I just found your blog and I love it! I ‘m new to the food photography world, but I’m having a blast with my new digital SLR and have found myself very interested in capturing photos with food and people as my main subjects. I would love to take a natural styling and photography 101 workshop and also a food in action workshop. Please let me know the next time one is available!

I would be very interested in taking Natural Food Styling & Photography 101. I would be a complete beginner, so I’m not sure if this would be a good first step?

  8. Nicole says:

I would love to take a class from you, I am a huge fan of your work and can’t wait for the doughnut book. I would love to see an intensive weekend workshop maybe the 101 class paired with Doughnuts to make it worth the trip down from Alaska.

    Hi Amie,

The class focuses a lot on food specific aspects of styling and photography rather than camera basics… but if you are comfortable taking photos with your camera, you’ll get something out of the class. If you still feel pretty unsure about your camera basics, it might be good to take a beginning photography class first (my studio mate Clare teaches one).

I would love to take a workshop from you. Can you email me dates for your natural food styling class and product photography? Also costs for the workshops.

I live in Portland but would love to make a long weekend trip taken up by a fulfilling education workshop.

I’m also looking to see what camera and lenses you use.

    Thank you in advance!
